Research


The Research branch of the Directorate comprising of the Museum, Archives, S.O.H.A.S., Gazetteers, Archaeology and Tribal Research Institute have published a number of books, booklets and Journals. These are 'Succession to Syiemship' by Capt. Herbert (reprinted in 1991), Ramke Dictionary - 1996, Autobiography of Ramke (A Garo Missionary), Khasi Hills District Gazetteer - 1991, Garo Hills District Gazetteer - 1996, Jaintia Hills District Gazetteer - 1997 and the Departmental Journal - "Heritage of Meghalaya" in three volumes.

The Department has also organized Workshop on 'Tribal Institution of Meghalaya', 'Garo Customary Laws', 'Pre-history of Meghalaya and Social Formation in Khasi-Jaintia History', 'Festival and Ceremonies of Meghalaya', 'Demographic study of lesser known tribes' and 'Dynamics of family system in a matriliny of Meghalaya'. The papers of the first four workshops were already published and made available for research scholars and interested general public. Symposium on 'Life and Works of Khasi Authors in the field of Khasi Literature', 'Life and Works of Garo Authors in the field of Garo Literature' and 'Life and Works of Jaintia Authors in the field of Khasi Literature' were organized on May 2000, August 2000 and March 2001 respectively for the purpose of documentation the biographies of the authors in the field of Khasi and Garo Literature.

A Translation Workshop was held at the Don Bosco Youth Centre on 5th March 2001 with the main objective to bring together all the translators of different parts of the State for giving them good grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of translation and preparing them to meet the challenges that translators have to face specially in the multi Lingual Indian set up.

A Seminar on the "Traditional Religious Beliefs and Practices of the people of Meghalaya" was held in September 2000 and on the "Growth and Development of Khasi and Garo languages" sponsored by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi was held on March 28 - 29, 2001 at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shillong.

State Literary Award 2000 has been conferred to Shri J.K.Diengdoh for his book "ki Lain Kham Khraw ban ka Taj-2000 for Khasi book and to Shri Chenggan A.Sangma for his book 'Pagitchamni Ku'ringa - 2000 for Garo book on January 21, 2002 which is the Meghalaya Statehood Day.
